Runner Crossing Bridge at Sunset

I took this shot on the banks of the Charles River on the Boston side while heading toward the Charles River Esplanade for some night shots. The sun was just heading for the horizon, and the bridge made a nice silhouette with all that brightness behind it. It just so happened that a runner was [...]
Approaching Storm

This is a shot I got while wandering around the harbor on Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont, when we were on vacation there last week. A storm front was moving in fast, and I was afraid that we were going to get rained on, but as it turns out, the clouds blew over and the [...]
Rowes Wharf and Custom House Tower at Dusk, Boston

This is a shot of the Boston Financial District skyline taken on the Boston Harborwalk near Moakley Courthouse. The clock tower in the center-right of the composition is the Custom House Tower. The tower has been through various iterations, but now houses a Marriott hotel. I love taking photos of the city during the “blue [...]
Boston Financial District Skyline at Night

Here’s a black and white shot of the Boston Financial District skyline under night skies taken from the Boston Harborwalk next to the Moakley Courthouse. It was a blustery evening with a storm front moving in, and I was afraid I would get rained on, but I managed to just get this shot in under [...]
Dusk at Splash Fountain, Boston

This is an evening shot of Splash Fountain at Christian Science Plaza in Boston. This fountain design allows 180 water jets to shoot directly out of the ground and is (obviously) illuminated at night. The plaza itself was designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei.
Boston Skyline at Dusk

Taken on the Boston Harborwalk near Moakley Courthouse. The light was stunning that evening, and I couldn’t take photos fast enough. I felt like I was taking photos while inside a jewel box, and my photo here barely begins to capture that feeling.
Fountain Lights

A shot of some fountain lights in the lobby of the Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Chicago. I liked the rough symmetry and reflective qualities of the both the water and the stone.
CITGO Sign on a Foggy Night – Fenway Park, Boston

This is a shot of the famous CITGO sign that sits near Fenway Park, the home of Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox. The sign has a very interesting history and is considered one of the iconic landmarks of the Boston skyline. That is the Harvard Bridge in the foreground with the red streaks from [...]
Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge at Twilight

This is the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge (aka the “Zakim Bridge”) in Boston as seen from North Point Park in Cambridge, Massachusetts. (Another one taken during a Flickr meetup with the folks from the Boston, Massachusetts, Flickr group. Thanks again to Greg for organizing this!)
Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge at Night

This is the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge (aka the “Zakim Bridge”) in Boston as seen from North Point Park in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This was taken a little bit later than some of the previous shots I took, and I pulled back a bit to capture the reflections on the water.
North Point Park at Sunset

Cambridge, Massachusetts North Point Park just opened a couple of years ago, and it’s a great place to do some evening and night photography, mostly because it’s close to the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, which is quite photogenic. I decided to get a shot looking away from the bridge toward the Museum of Science, and [...]
Inner Harbor at Sunset – Gloucester, Massachusetts

Went out to Gloucester, Massachusetts, on Cape Ann last weekend and headed straight for the water. It is one of the great fishing ports on the Eastern seaboard of North America. Found the Inner Harbor area and managed to get some shots at dusk. This is one of them. That building is the “Gloucester Manufactory,” [...]
3 Fishing Trawlers

Fisherman’s Terminal, Seattle And, yes, that gray sky is probably here to stay, more or less permanently, until next July. The splashes of color from these fishing boats, though, can help make up for all of the gray and rain of the coming months.
Canal with Drawbridge

This is the canal leading into Seattle’s Hiram M. Chittendon Locks, connecting Puget Sound (salt water) with Lake Union and Lake Washington (both fresh water) via a ship canal. I can bike here in about 10 minutes from my house, so I spent a lot of time down at the locks today, shooting photos and [...]
East Waterway, Port of Seattle

A wider, panoramic shot of the East Waterway of the Port of Seattle. You can see a tugboat and two big container ships. The interesting about the container ships is that you can’t say whether or not they are loading or unloading because they load and unload simultaneously — a fact that I just learned [...]
Freighter Anchored in Elliott Bay, Seattle

I’ve been biking by these freighters a lot lately and wanted to catch the sort of stillness they emanate as they sit anchored in Elliott Bay. Again, I processed this as HDR and then used a mild “Orton” effect in Photoshop to create that kind of glow on the freighter.
At the Grain Terminal (2)

OK. I admit it. I had a lot of fun doing this one. When I bicycle to work along Elliott Bay in Seattle, I go through Myrtle Edwards Park on the bike path and pass the grain terminal, where there is invariably a grain ship from some exotic place like China, Panama, Greece, or Malaysia [...]
Seattle Skyline at Night

And one more from my little twilight photo shoot on the Water Taxi pier in West Seattle. This one is of course looking the other way than the previous two shots I posted. I iniitially processed this from 3 exposures as HDR, but mostly just to get the exposure right. Some of those HDR shots [...]
Fishermen at the Water Taxi Pier, West Seattle

Well. I had quite a time a week ago Friday hanging out on the fishing pier where the West Seattle water taxi comes in from downtown. I had intended on getting only some twilight skyline shots, but the fishermen and the water taxi were there and so I turned the tripod and got a few [...]
Seattle skyline, with cloud

Just a recent photo I took + a little editing in PhotoShop = not a bad picture at all. (Taken from the balcony of a friend’s house in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle). Even though I didn’t specifically process it as an HDR shot, it has that look and feel about it.
Durham, boats on the River Wear

More boats on the River Wear in Durham. I think I like this one a bit better than the one that only has the wooden boats that I posted earlier. Again this was just taken as a quick snapshot with a point-and-shoot Sony Cybershot digicam. I saw the boats, leaned over the railing of the [...]
North Sea from Bamburgh Castle

I wish I could achieve the simplicity of this composition more often. The funny thing about this shot was that it was taken as more of a snapshot in just a moment of time. I didn’t think about composing it first. I just ducked my head through an archway as we were wandering around the [...]
Durham, boats on the River Wear

Just took this with my point-and-shoot Sony digicam without thinking about it very much. I just pointed the camera and got the shot. Funny how sometimes the best “compositions” are just sitting there waiting to be captured in a photo. Fiddled with the color and contrast a bit in Photoshop, but other than that I [...]
